Born and raised in California, up-and-coming Country musician Lexi Lauren is finding her roots in Tennessee. A long-time lover of the genre, Lexi Lauren covered Country Queen Dolly Parton’s “Hard Candy Christmas” this holiday season. We had a chat with Lexi Lauren about her musical journey and the projects that she’s been working on so far.
Check out our exclusive interview below:
BCT: What kind of music did you grow up listening to?
Lexi Lauren: I listened to country, but I was the only one listening to it when I was growing up! My family likes a lot of different music, from pop to Christian to rap to rock – and NOW they even love country. I fell in love with the genre when I was young and haven’t looked back since.
BCT: Do you remember your first ever performance? What did you sing? What was it like?
Lexi Lauren: Yes I do. I sang “Burning House” by Cam, and I shook so bad, cracked so many times, and could barely sing the lyrics without messing them up.
BCT: Why did you decide to pick up a guitar?
Lexi Lauren: I was a dancer for 8 years, but that all changed in October of 2015, when I fractured my foot. I was devastated and thought that it was the worst thing that could have ever happened. During the 6 weeks I spent in a big, black boot, I had a newfound love for the guitar and started playing and singing. For hours and hours a day, I would sit there and master cords and songs and different progressions. When my foot healed, I jumped right back into dance, and instantly didn’t feel right about it. I kept hearing this voice inside my head, telling me I needed to quit dance and pursue music instead.
BCT: Musical.ly had a big part in you gaining a fanbase! What made you want to start an account?
Lexi Lauren: I really liked that it was different than all the other social media sites I was using, and instantly got hooked. It’s a different audience than a lot of people I connect with on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter – and I have loved getting to know a whole new group of people.
BCT: Let’s talk about “Don’t Text” for a minute. What inspired the song? What was the writing process like?
Lexi Lauren: It seems like everyone is on their phone texting nowadays. I wanted to show people that you can pick up the phone and actually call someone. To make any relationship work, there has to be that kind of communication involved. The writing process was amazing. I wrote the song with my producer, Mika Krstic, who I absolutely love working with. Him and I work really well together, and I love the message we display throughout the song!
BCT: You recently moved to Tennessee! Why the change of scenery? What are you hoping to accomplish in your career in Tennessee?
Lexi Lauren: I had the dream to move to Nashville. The first time I visited, I fell in love with it and it immediately felt like home. This town is full of talented people, endless inspiration, and music everywhere. It’s honestly magical.
BCT: It’s that time of year when everybody is releasing holiday tracks. “Hard Candy Christmas” is a unique choice. What made you decide to cover that song?
Lexi Lauren: The lyrics of the song are so honest and vulnerable, and different than most lyrics in a Christmas song. Dolly Parton did an incredible job on the song, and I’ve always wanted to record my own version of it.
BCT: You also recently released a lyric video! What was that process like as compared to your experience shooting the music video for “Don’t Text?”
Lexi Lauren: It was my first lyric video I’ve done so far, and much different than a music video shoot. I went all around Downtown Franklin, TN to show the adorable charm and Christmas cheer that it has.
BCT: What’s on your wish list for the holidays this year?
Lexi Lauren: Honestly, I want to spend as much time with family as possible! Some of my family members are flying out from California to visit for Christmas, and it’ll be fun to catch up and relax together. Also, on my Christmas wish list s makeup, workout gear, and bath bombs.
BCT: The New Year is coming up! Is there anything that you can share with us that’s happening with your music in 2018?
Lexi Lauren: New music, new video, a lot of awesome stuff coming up! Can’t say much about it yet… but I’m extremely excited about it and can’t wait to share it all super soon!
